You are the sky, not the weather. Clouds, storms, and rainbows pass through, and the sky is never harmed. Open awareness invites you to rest as that sky: wide, welcoming, and untroubled by whatever moves through it.
OriginsThe Root of the Practice
Teachers like J. Krishnamurti called this choiceless awareness, a watching without choosing and without judging. The Dzogchen masters of Tibet point to the same open, luminous knowing, and the Taoist sage dwells in it as wu wei, effortless being. The mystics of the Christian desert rested in it as the quiet that listens. Under many names the invitation is the same: let everything be, and see who is seeing.
The WayWhat the Practice Teaches
There is no object here to hold. You sit and let sounds, thoughts, sensations, and moods arise exactly as they are. Nothing is pushed away, and nothing is grasped. Awareness is not made. It is recognized, as the space in which all of this happens. Effort melts into ease, and a spacious clarity shows itself to have been present all along. This is your natural condition, and it asks only to be noticed.
BeginHow to Practice
- Sit comfortably and let the posture be relaxed and upright.
- Begin with a few breaths, then release the breath as an anchor.
- Open to everything at once: sound, sensation, thought, sight.
- Let each thing come and go like weather across the sky.
- If you get lost in a story, notice the noticing and open again.
- Rest like this for as long as it feels easy, then end with a gentle breath.
HarvestThe Fruit
Life stops feeling like a battle with your own mind. Clear space appears in the middle of busy days. You find that you can hold great joys and great sorrows without being toppled by either.
May you rest as the vast, kind sky, and know yourself to be at home in everything.
