The Sacred Gardens of God

Entheogens, Holy Wisdom, and the Healing of the World

From the altar at Arad to the mushroom vigils of Oaxaca, humanity has always gone into the garden to meet God. The White Lotus Society walks that road gladly, and invites you to walk it with us.

THE GOOD NEWS OF THE GARDEN

Religion has always grown from the soil

Long before there were cathedrals, there were gardens. Long before there were creeds, there were fragrant smoke, sacred drink, holy fungi, and the open hand of a people giving thanks. The living world has been humanity’s first scripture, and in it we have read of healing, of death made gentle, of heaven near at hand.

This is our inheritance. Archaeologists have found it on ancient altars. Scribes recorded it in the codices and hymns. Rastafari, Mazatec healers, Hindu devotees of Shiva, and Zoroastrian priests keep it alive today. Entheogens, the plants and fungi that fill the heart with God, belong to the story of religion from its first pages, and the White Lotus Society welcomes them home.

THE WITNESSES

Nine places where the plants met the sacred

The evidence is bright, it is concrete, and it spans the whole earth.

TEL ARAD, JUDAH  *  8TH CENTURY BCE

Cannabis on the altar

In a Judahite sanctuary, laboratories found THC, CBD, and CBN on a limestone altar, prepared with dung fuel for gentle, steady heat. Beside it stood a second altar of frankincense and animal fat. Cannabis, resin, and smoke rose together in the worship of God.

JIRZANKAL, THE PAMIRS  *  ABOUT 500 BCE

Smoke for the beloved dead

In wooden braziers beside burials, cannabis smoke accompanied music and farewell. A community sat with its dead and let a sacred plant help them cross the threshold with song.

INDIA  *  BHANG AND SHIVA

The devotion of the festival

Bhang belongs to the worship of Shiva, to the life of ascetics, and to the joy of festivals. The Indian Hemp Drugs Commission of 1893 to 1894 heard from more than eleven hundred witnesses and recorded a faith in which this plant is woven into holy days and family life.

SUFI SOCIETIES  *  DUG-E WAHDAT

The beverage of unity

Mystics of the Islamic world named a cannabis drink du?-e wa?dat, the “beverage of unity,” and drank it in the pursuit of oneness with the Beloved.

JAMAICA AND THE WORLD  *  RASTAFARI

Ganja as living sacrament

In prayer, in meditation with Jah, and in the circle of communal reasoning, Rastafari lift up ganja as a holy herb. Their testimony stands today as a living scripture of the plant’s sacred standing.

MESOAMERICA  *  TEONANACATL

The flesh of the gods

The Nahua named the sacred mushroom teonanacatl. The Florentine Codex tells of merchants who gave thanks for a safe return by eating mushrooms with honey, while shell trumpets sounded, people danced and wept, saw visions, and afterward shared what they had received. Worship, music, and community gathered into one.

OAXACA  *  THE MAZATEC VELADA

Healing with Jesus and Mary

Through the night vigil, Mazatec healers pray and heal with the sacred mushrooms, calling on Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary beside the ancestral powers. María Sabina carried this light to the world, and the tradition belongs to a whole people.

VEDIC INDIA AND PERSIA  *  SOMA AND HAOMA

The consecrated cup

Soma sang through the Vedic hymns. Haoma stands in the Zoroastrian Yasna to this day, where the priest prepares the sacred liquid, with Ephedra among the plants honored in that rite. A holy plant sits at the heart of two of the oldest liturgies on earth.

ELEUSIS, GREECE  *  THE MYSTERIES OF DEMETER

The kykeon and the promise beyond death

For nearly two thousand years, pilgrims drank the kykeon at Eleusis and returned with hope that neither life nor death could shake. The ergot interpretation of the sacred drink, from Wasson, Hofmann, and Ruck, gained fresh experimental support in a 2026 study in Scientific Reports, which showed ergot alkaloids converting into lysergic acid amide compounds by methods available to the ancients. The chemistry of the laboratory and the faith of the temple now speak together.

THE REVEALING OF HIDDEN KNOWLEDGE

What was dismissed has been vindicated

Scholars once called the Aztec mushroom ceremonies fiction. Then Richard Evans Schultes walked into Oaxaca in the late 1930s and found the mushrooms, the healers, and the vigils exactly as the old chroniclers described. The colonial officers who studied cannabis in India found a faith already centuries deep. Rastafari endured prison for their sacrament and kept their prayer.

Again and again, the keepers of sacred plant knowledge told the truth, and the truth has come to light. The White Lotus Society honors those keepers: the Mazatec healers, the Nahua elders, the sadhus, the Rastafari elders, the Zoroastrian priests, and the Sufi sheikhs. We listen to them first. We learn from them with gratitude, and we give back with open hands.

THE LUMINOUS WAY

The theology of the White Lotus

The White Lotus Society is a universal church, and its theology rests on one joyful conviction: the one Light shines through every holy path, and every holy path leads home. Christ, the Holy Spirit, Holy Wisdom, the Buddha, the Tao, the Pure Land, Shiva’s open awareness: each is a doorway into the same luminous Presence.

  • God is present in the whole creation. The plant, the fungus, the soil, the smoke, the water, and the human heart are all held in the one Divine life. The garden is a sanctuary.
  • Sacred plants are gifts. Cannabis, the holy mushroom, the consecrated herb: each is a gift of creation, offered to be received with thanksgiving, prayer, and care.
  • Christ is divine love given fully. The Holy Spirit is God’s breath and presence in us. Amida’s Infinite Light, the Tao’s quiet flow, and Christ’s self-giving love are recognized in our church as one Radiance.
  • Communion belongs to the people. Every sincere seeker may approach the sacred through the door that opens for them: silence, song, study, service, the table, the garden, or the sacred plant.
  • Freedom of conscience is holy. Every person’s relationship with God is theirs to walk. We stand with every community whose sacrament has been misunderstood, and we defend the right to worship.
  • Awakening becomes compassion. The fruit of every vision is a gentler life: patience in the home, generosity in the street, honesty in the market, mercy for every creature.
  • The church is a hearth. We gather in homes, gardens, and sanctuaries to pray, sing, eat together, and send each other out as lamps.
HOLY WISDOM

The Mother who feeds the world

The earth is a table, and Someone set it. In our church that Someone is named with the oldest and tenderest names: Holy Wisdom, Holy Sophia, the Holy Spirit. She is the Breath hovering over the waters at the dawn of creation, the Presence who fills the prophets, the Teacher who walks beside every seeker.

Many traditions have spoken of the Divine Mother. The White Lotus Society speaks of the White Lotus Eternal Mother and recognizes her as Holy Sophia and the Holy Spirit: Wisdom at play in the garden, the Spirit moving in the leaf and the dove, the Comforter who heals every sorrow. Every prayer to the Mother is a prayer to Holy Wisdom. Every sacred plant is one of her gifts laid on the table, and every shared meal is her feast.

When we receive her gifts with reverence, we remember that we are her children, and that the hungry child at the door is our own sibling.

THE GIFTS WE CELEBRATE

Medicine, mystery, and daily bread

Cannabis

Sacrament in Rastafari, bhang in the worship of Shiva, incense on the altar of Arad. Medicine today in purified CBD for severe childhood seizures and in cannabinoid treatments for chemotherapy nausea, appetite loss, chronic pain, and spasticity. Many practitioners find in it a gentle doorway to gratitude, beauty, and love, and we rejoice with them.

Psilocybin

The flesh of the gods in Mesoamerica and the healing sacrament of the Mazatec. In clinical trials, supported psilocybin sessions brought swift relief from depression: in a study of 104 people, one session lifted symptoms within days, and the benefit held through the six-week study. Participants speak of connection, peace with mortality, and new love for life.

Hemp

A garden of daily bread and renewable gifts. Its seeds offer protein, essential amino acids, and healthy oils. Its fiber becomes paper, cloth, and building material, and so gives the forests room to grow. Hemp feeds neighbors, clothes families, and helps heal the land.

THE FRUIT

Works of mercy in the White Lotus church

A vision becomes a blessing when it reaches the neighbor. Wherever the White Lotus is planted, these works flower:

A PRAYER TO HOLY WISDOM

For the garden and the table

Holy Wisdom, Holy Sophia, Holy Spirit, Mother of every living thing, we thank you for the gardens of the earth.

For the herb on the altar, the mushroom in the dark forest, the seed in the open hand, and the bread on the common table, we thank you.

Open our eyes to see you in every leaf. Open our hands to feed the hungry. Open our hearts to love every creature, and let every vision of your Light become a deed of mercy.

Make us lamps in the world, white lotuses rising from the mud, bright with your peace.

AMEN
